How did Reiki begin in the United States?

All most all of Reiki taught outside Japan is attributed to Hawayo Takata. Takata received multiple Reiki sessions for illnesses including abdominal pain and asthma from trainees of Chujiro Hayashi – one of 16 Reiki Master's trained and initiated Mikao Usui. Thereafter, Hayashi initiated and trained Takata to use Reiki. After Takata became a Reiki Master in 1938 she convinced Usui to allow her to simplify Usui Reiki by eliminating some of the techniques. Takata thereafter established several Reiki clinics in Hawaii. After setting up the clinics Takata traveled throughout the United States teaching Reiki levels one and two. Beginning in 1970, Takata trained and initiated a total of 22 Reiki Masters until her death in 1980.

Are there more than one type of Reiki?

Yes. The two main types of Reiki are the Traditional Japanese Reiki based on Usui's teachings and Western Reiki. Usui Reiki relies on an intuitive sense of hand-placements while Western Reiki uses a systematized set of hand-positions.

I've seen this treatment spelled as Reiki, Rekki, Reki, Rekhi, Rakie, and Reiky. What is the correct spelling for this treatment?

Reiki ( 霊気 ) is a phonetic compound spelling of the Japanese words “Rei” ( 霊 - spirit, divine, miraculous) and “ki”(気 - vital life energy). Put together it spells Reiki. Nearly all Usui's followers spell the term as Reiki.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient form of the disciplines and techniques of hands on healing, originating in India and the East, believed to date back thousands of years before the time of Christ and Buddha. The original name of these disciplines and techniques were lost. Exactly when this ancient art of healing disappeared is difficult to determine. A Japanese Scholar and Buddhist monk rediscovered these disciplines and techniques in the middle nineteenth century in Japan and fashioned the name Reiki. Translated, Reiki has come to mean the Universal Life Energy. Reiki is perhaps one of the most natural holistic healing methods currently known. Reiki is transmitted though the hands of an experienced practitioner who has been attuned to the Reiki healing energies. Reiki is a safe, powerful, natural system that unlocks the inner flows of the Vital Life Force.

Who discovered Reiki?

Reiki was rediscovered and developed in 1922 by Dr. Mikao Usui – the president and minister of the Christian School in Kyoto, Japan. Dr. Usui claimed to have received a mystical revelation wherein he gained the spiritual power and knowledge to apply and attune others to Reiki treatments. Later that year Mikao Usui moved to Tokyo and founded “Usui's Spiritual Energy Therapy Method Society to provide Reiki treatments to people on a large scale. Mikao Usui's form of Reiki is known as the Traditional Usui Reiki Ryōhō Treatment.
